Most of us don’t want to spend our free time “decluttering”, but making that dreaded task part of our regular family rhythm is just the ticket to not reaching chaotic overwhelm in your spaces. For our family of 5, once we began adding seasonal decluttering into our schedule, it began to feel less daunting and built some decluttering muscle for the kids.
Now that my kids are a bit older, some of them have no problem making decisions about what to keep and what to let go of (even if this sentimental mama is sometimes sad with what they choose to let go). Others of my kids are not likely to minimize ANYTHING (even trash) unless I am working alongside them or they are waiting for me to do it. Meeting them where they are helps.
I find breaks from school (Winter break, Spring break, Summertime) ideal for kids to tackle their clutter or outgrown items. When you start them from a young age, they will be more equipped to do this on their own later in life. It’s NEVER too late to start!! Here are some tips to consider this summer for yourself, or with your kids.
10-15 Minute Intervals
Set a timer or play some music. Knowing you don’t have to do more than that will help you maximize that short interval. These little bursts build momentum over time to keep at it.
One Category at a Time
Just books. Or just swimwear. Or just shoes. Or Just hats. One stack of paper.
Little bites is much easier than an entire room.
Pay it Forward
When we declutter out of an abundance mindset and also an awareness that there are communities in need around us that would benefit from our items, we are more likely to let them go.
Make some Cash
If you have some higher end brand name clothing, furniture, or larger recreational items like bikes, golf clubs, skiis, etc. consider listing them for sale online.
You can also motivate your kids to pass along items by paying them for whatever they get rid of or enlisting their help with a yard sale or online posting.
“I’m Bored”
This is all my kids need to say to be given a category in their room to declutter.
Less STUFF = More SUMMER FUN!
