Prep for the School Year

We are less than a month out from the start of school, which means lots of prep work on supplies, schedules, and routines. When my oldest began kindergarten, I realized I would have children at two different schools, doubling the paperwork and calendars, and activities for our family.

I'm a firm believer in processing paperwork right away, unsubscribing on a regular basis from email lists + mailings, and digitizing where possible, but there are always papers that we need to keep track of.

Creating a space in the home where all the documents go right away has been such a help to everyone in our family. Recovering a large bulletin board we already had, and creating a large family calendar that everyone can read were the keys to this space. Hooks below for backpacks completes our "school zone".

School calendars? On the board. Homework word lists? On the board. School supply lists? On the board. Library books receipt? on the board. Dance and Soccer and Scouts info, oh my! On the board. What's on the weekend schedule? Read the calendar.

When in doubt on location, think vertical!

  • Bulletin boards are often found at secondhand stores like Goodwill.

  • You can find fabric remnants for cheap at upholstery or craft stores.

  • I recommend purchasing a large frame at Goodwill or a similar store with a GLASS frame for ease of erasing (Plexiglass tends to soak up dry erase markers more).

  • Use coordinating fabrics + paint chips from the hardware/paint store.

  • Finish off with hooks from etsy, Hobby Lobby or your favorite salvage store.

Problem Solved: Command Center

Before my oldest began Kindergarten, I knew I wanted to use some vertical space in the kitchen for a Command Center. I used a bulletin board, frame, and leftover fabric, all of which I had on hand, along with some paint chips to create a one stop shop for all the papers regarding school, homework and the kids activities. The backpacks hang below on some splurge hooks from Anthropologie.
